Mailroom Clerk/Pony Driver

General Responsibilities

This is clerical work that provides distribution of U.S. and intra-system mail. An employee in this class is responsible for the proper sorting and distribution of U.S. and intra-system mail. The nature of the work is such that the employee works independently in the processing of U.S. mail following federal postal regulations and guidelines. This employee will need experience driving a box truck to be a backup for the pony drivers, picking up and delivering mail to the schools and offsite locations. The employee makes most work decisions independently but refers technical policy or procedural questions to a superior for the decision.

Work is performed under the general supervision of the Chief of Operations but with responsibility for the independent performance of work essentially based on own judgment and initiative, following well-established procedures. This position has no supervisory responsibilities. This is a single-position classification with specialized responsibilities for distributing incoming and outgoing mail.

Education and Experience

Graduation from high school and experience in performing postal-related activities; or any equivalent combination of education and experience that would provide the above noted knowledge, skill, and ability. Previous experience driving a box truck as well as a current, unrestricted Virginia Driver's License is required.

Essential Job Functions

  • Sorts and distributes incoming U.S. and intra-system mail to appropriate offices and departments notifies employees of special shipments and delivers packages and other items of special importance.
  • Performs the duties of the Pony Driver position when needed, picking up and delivering mail to schools and offsite locations.
  • Performs related work as required.


Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to use computer, work processing software, and mail machine software.
  • Thorough knowledge of the general organization and functions of the school system in order to distribute mail accurately.
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service and to communicate information accurately and effectively to school system employees.
  • Ability to drive a mail truck to provide coverage for the Pony Driver position.

Physical Effort

Physical effort required to lift and move heavy boxes and pull heavy objects from high shelves.

Skill, dexterity, fine motor and visual skills to perform data entry and keyboarding tasks (PC or terminal).

Hazards

Normal potential hazards for minor injury associated with stocking and pulling inventory, sorting mail, and delivering packages.

Unusual Demands

Work is performed in an office environment and is subject to frequent interruptions.
