Recreation Professional - Permanent Full-Time

Description:

Are you a dedicated individual looking to lead and implement a diverse range of recreational activities for our vibrant waterfront community? If you have a passion for creating engaging experiences and promoting community well-being, then WE are looking for you! Additionally, this role will serve as a lead for department athletics, planning, coordinating, and implementing programs for the department.

The purpose of this position within the organization is to provide and conduct a complete program of recreational activities for citizens of all ages in the City of Hampton. This position works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences. Supervises non-departmental instructors, volunteers, and part-time staff.

Minimum Requirements

  1. Associates degree or two (2) years of college level or post-secondary education in Recreation, Physical Education or related field.
  2. Requires two (2) years of full-time equivalent experience in recreation work at a professional or paraprofessional level in one or more of the primary functional areas of recreation.
  3. When assigned to Therapeutic Recreation: must have a minimum of one (1) year of experience in a therapeutic recreation environment, to include experience in settings such as: adapted physical education, special education, and residential/institutional settings inclusive of individuals with disabilities.
  4. A combination of education and experience may be considered for this position.
  5. Must possess or obtain basic CPR/First Aid certifications within 90 days of employment.
  6. When assigned to Therapeutic Recreation, a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) certification is preferred.
  7. Must possess a valid driver's license and must have and maintain a satisfactory driver's record based on the City of Hampton's criteria.
  8. This position is safety sensitive and is subject to testing for alcohol and controlled substances in accordance with the City's current substance abuse policy.
  9. Must successfully pass a background check related to this position prior to any offer of employment or promotion.

Additional Requirements

  1. Requires shift work to include some nights, weekends, and holidays.
  2. May require some local travel.
  3. The incumbent may be considered “essential personnel” during city emergency situations, or at the direction of the City Manager or designee, which may include long hours and unusual schedules.
