The City of Virginia Beach Department of Human Services is seeking to hire a Food Services Assistant (Cook) who has experience working with adults with Intellectual Disabilities in an ICF/ ID Residential/long-term care setting for our West Neck Intermediate Care Facility. if you have experience preparing and serving meals for residents at an Intermediate Care Facility or other large facility we welcome your interest!

Schedule Includes Weekends and Holidays: Sun, Mon, Tues, Wed, Thurs, Weekends and Holidays

Duties:

  • Prepare and serve meals to meet health and nutritional requirements of the residents.
  • Assure that health and safety standards related to food storage, preparation and clean-up are met. Includes dishwashing and floor mopping.
  • Collaborate with Registered Dietician and nursing staff in menu planning to assure that daily nutritional requirements and physician's orders are met.
  • Assist in maintenance of food inventory to ensure ingredients for planned meals are available.
  • Work closely with second cook in the facility and with the food service delivery company.
  • Assist in required recordkeeping to assure that policies and procedures necessary for reimbursement are met.
  • Ensure that food is prepared in sufficient quantity for population served.
  • Menu changes should be rare, and any substitutions must meet daily nutritional requirements and be documented
  • Health Department sanitary inspections and relevant licensure standards must be met.
  • Faulty equipment is reported according to procedure to prevent serious injuries / accidents from occurring to self or others.
  • Ensure that records are kept, and reports submitted on time and according to procedures.
  • Follow individual client menus for meal preparation, including texture modifications like soft, chopped or pureed.

Minimum Requirements:

MINIMUMS: Requires a High School Diploma or GED, and three (3) years of experience in fields utilizing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities, such as bulk cooking in a school, restaurant, or institution OR any combination of education (above high school level) and related experience equivalent to three (3) years in fields utilizing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. *Food Certification Manager's license required. *(Food handler's card changed to Food Certification Manager 12/93 per Health Department.)

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. TB test may be required.

Preferences:

One (1) year or more of experience working in a residential setting
One (1) year or more of experience with basic food preparation and cooking
Knowledge of kitchen sanitation and health procedures
Experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities
Food Service Management Certification or equivalent
Experience with preparing and cooking special diets
