Position Summary:
As a Sheet Metal Technician, you will play a crucial role in fabricating and installing building components made of various sheet metals. This position offers opportunities for learning and skill development in a supportive environment.

Key Responsibilities & Functional Knowledge:
This role includes various responsibilities that require a growing proficiency in essential skills and knowledge. You will be expected to perform the following tasks with increasing independence:

  • General:
    • Gain familiarity with different types and sizes of sheet metal.
    • Accurately measure sheet metal to specified dimensions.
    • Interpret basic drawings, sketches, and written instructions.
    • Assist experienced mechanics with habitability tasks.
    • Identify and work with various materials, including galvanized steel, aluminum, and stainless steel.
    • Safely operate trade power tools.
    • Handle and contain materials responsibly.
  • Ventilation Fabrication:
    • Learn to read sketches and assist with the fabrication process under supervision.
  • Fabrication:
    • Fabricate a variety of sheet metal items, including vents, flashings, pans, and boxes.
    • Develop skills in creating miscellaneous components such as bulkhead panels and containers.
  • Equipment Operation:
    • Begin training on power tools, including rollers, hand brakes, power brakes, and sheers.

Required Education, Experience, & Skills

To qualify for this position, you should have at least a high school diploma or GED and 3 to 5 years of relevant experience.

Practical Theory Requirements:
Demonstrate a developing understanding of different sheet metals and NAVSEA drawings and standards.

Other Requirements:

  • Ability to read, write, and comprehend simple instructions.
  • Capable of applying common sense understanding to carry out written, oral, or diagrammatic instructions.
  • Basic mathematical skills, including calculation and understanding of measurements, fractions, and decimals.
  • Proficient in using a scale and tape measure accurately.
  • Competence in operating hand tools and power tools independently.
  • Must adhere to PPE protocols, including wearing hard hats, safety goggles, gloves, steel-toed shoes, ear protection, face shields, Tyvek suits, and respirators.
  • Ability to obtain a government access badge.

Preferred Education, Experience, & Skills
While not required, basic tack welding skills are strongly preferred.

Pay Information
This position operates under a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) that defines wage structures.
