The City of Virginia Beach is seeking a detail-oriented Accounting Clerk I to support daily financial and customer service operations. This position is responsible for processing payments, researching returned checks, handling refunds, and assisting taxpayers by phone. The ideal candidate has strong organizational skills, basic accounting knowledge, and a commitment to providing accurate and courteous public service.
Key duties and responsibilities include balancing and reconciling daily cash, check, and credit card deposits to ensure accuracy and compliance with City procedures; answering incoming phone calls from taxpayers, providing clear and professional assistance regarding payments and accounts; researching daily returned checks and accurately documenting findings in the financial system; processing refunds in accordance with established policies and timelines; processing and tracking returned mail, updating customer and account records as needed; maintaining accurate records and ensuring confidentiality of sensitive financial information; and supporting general clerical and revenue-related duties as assigned.
Minimum qualifications include a high school diploma or equivalent, prior experience in clerical, accounting, cashiering, or customer service preferred, basic knowledge of cash handling, data entry, and financial recordkeeping, ability to communicate professionally with the public by phone, strong attention to detail and accuracy, and ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
