Firefighter Position

Duties:

  • Develop fire and life safety inspection programs for fire suppression personnel.
  • Develop long-range plans for a fire program.
  • Inspect equipment to verify they are fully operational and meet regulatory requirements.

Requirements:

  • Must be a US Citizen.
  • Must be determined suitable for federal employment.
  • Must participate in the direct deposit pay program.
  • New employees to the Department of the Navy will be required to successfully pass the E-Verify employment verification check.
  • Generally, current federal employees applying for GS jobs must serve at least one year at the next lower grade level.
  • Applicants must meet the Department of Defense (DoD) certification requirements.
  • Candidates for firefighter positions must not have reached their 37th birthday by date of appointment.
  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
  • Within the Department of Defense (DoD), the appointment of retired military members within 180 days immediately following retirement date to a civilian position is subject to the provisions of 5 United States Code 3326.
  • Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Service.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain a current valid United States driver's license.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty.
  • Position is embedded and can be either a 40- or 56-hour work week based on certifications.
  • You will be required to complete training, obtain, and maintain a government credit card for travel and travel-related purchases.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites.
  • This is a Mission Essential position.
  • This position falls under the respiratory protection program and hearing conservation program.
  • Position requires the ability to discern colors, contrast, and depth.

Qualifications:

GS-12: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:

  • Demonstrates expert knowledge of program management processes and procedures to include experience in identifying and prioritizing fire prevention and code occupational requirements for sustainment of mission needs.
  • Possesses thorough knowledge of national, DoD, Navy & local fire codes, standards, regulations, and instructions in order to interpret and apply applicable codes to detect and eliminate fire & life safety hazards.
  • Uses skills in selecting the applicable code or standard relevant to particular types of facilities and hazards, type of construction and other variables.
  • Analyzes and interprets codes & standards to make compliance determinations.
  • Possesses clear oral communication and public speaking skills which are required in order to provide fire and life safety training and events.
  • Possesses skills in writing reports, case notes, briefings, instructions & regulations, and written correspondence.
  • Demonstrates knowledge in post-fire investigation cause and origination techniques and theory.

GS-11: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-10 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector performing the following duties:

  • Demonstrates knowledge of program management processes and procedures to include experience in identifying and prioritizing fire prevention and code occupational requirements for sustainment of mission needs.
  • Possesses thorough knowledge of national, DoD, Navy & local fire codes, standards, regulations, and instructions in order to interpret and apply applicable codes to detect and eliminate fire & life safety hazards.

CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

This position requires the incumbent to possess the following certifications:

  • IFASC, ProBoard or DoD Fire Firefighter I & II (Required for 56 hr work week)
  • IFASC, ProBoard or DoD Fire Instructor II
  • IFASC, ProBoard or DoD Fire Inspector II
  • IFASC, ProBoard, DoD Fire Inspector III or New 2025 NFPA 1030
  • IFASC, ProBoard, DoD Fire Inspector (Required for GS12. GS11 must obtain within 1 year)
  • IFASC, ProBoard or DoD Fire Officer III
  • IFASC, ProBoard or DoD HazMat Awareness
  • IFASC, ProBoard or DoD HazMat Operations (Required for 56 hour work week)
  • IFASC, ProBoard or DoD Plans Examiner I (Required for GS12. GS11 must obtain within 1 year)
  • CPR (American Heart Association "Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers" or equivalent)
  • NREMT (Required for 56 hour work week)
  • Emergency Vehicle Operations (EVOC)
  • ICS 100, 200, 300, 400, 700, and 800
  • Copies of Certifications MUST be submitted with your application.
