Director of Software Engineering & Agile Delivery
Salary: $185,000 - $215,000 per year
Overview
We are seeking an experienced Director of Software Engineering & Agile Delivery to lead software development teams, drive engineering excellence, and oversee the successful delivery of enterprise software solutions. This role is responsible for managing software development resources, improving Agile and DevOps practices, driving release management initiatives, and ensuring engineering teams consistently deliver high‑quality software on time and within budget. The ideal candidate is a proven technology leader with a strong software development background, experience leading Agile organizations, and a passion for building high‑performing engineering teams.
This position serves as a strategic leader responsible for aligning engineering execution with business objectives while fostering a culture of collaboration, accountability, innovation, and continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and mentor software development teams across multiple projects and initiatives
- Provide technical leadership and strategic direction for software engineering and Agile delivery practices
- Manage engineering resources, staffing plans, hiring, performance management, and employee development
- Coach and develop engineering managers, Scrum Masters, and technical team members
- Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement
- Oversee software development efforts from planning through deployment and production support
- Manage software release schedules, priorities, risks, resource allocation, and delivery commitments
- Ensure software releases are delivered on time, within budget, and at the highest quality standards
- Monitor project progress and communicate status, risks, and resource needs to executive leadership
- Collaborate with Product Management to develop release plans, roadmaps, and feature prioritization strategies
- Serve as an Agile champion and coach across engineering teams
- Ensure Scrum teams are operating effectively and consistently meeting sprint commitments
- Mentor Scrum Masters and promote Agile best practices throughout the organization
- Drive process improvements that increase productivity, quality, and predictability
- Identify and eliminate bottlenecks within development, testing, and deployment processes
- Promote collaboration between Development, QA, Product, and Operations teams
- Identify opportunities to improve DevOps practices, deployment automation, and release management processes
- Support software deployment activities, release planning, user acceptance testing, and production readiness efforts
- Help establish scalable development and operational practices that support long‑term growth
- Partner closely with Product Owners, Project Managers, QA teams, and executive leadership
- Ensure requirements are clearly defined, traceable, and aligned with business objectives
- Provide regular reporting on engineering performance, project health, and organizational effectiveness
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related technical discipline
- 8+ years of experience delivering enterprise software solutions through the full software development lifecycle
- 5+ years of leadership experience managing software development teams
- Strong background in Agile methodologies including Scrum and Agile delivery frameworks
- Experience leading software releases, development roadmaps, and cross‑functional engineering initiatives
- Strong people leadership, coaching, mentoring, and team development experience
- Excellent communication, presentation, and stakeholder management skills
Technical Background
- Java application development
- RESTful APIs and web services
- Relational databases (Oracle, PostgreSQL, or similar)
- Software architecture and design principles
- Software testing methodologies and QA processes
- Agile development practices
- DevOps concepts and software release management
Preferred Experience
- Experience leading multiple Agile teams
- Experience scaling software development organizations
- Experience implementing Agile transformation initiatives
- Experience improving engineering processes and delivery performance
- Experience working within SaaS, enterprise software, transportation technology, government technology, telecommunications, or other complex software environments
