Responsible for protecting the Hot Work Operator, all affected personnel, and equipment from harm during Hot Work operations of Naval vessels under repair.
No other duties are to be performed while posted as a Firewatch.
Check that the Hot Work Permit is valid, sign the Hot Work ticket, review the specific type of work and precautions described, and maintain the conditions and requirements stated on the safety permit.
Follow all directions as given in the Firewatch training. Make sure that the area is free from combustibles or protected if closer than 35 ft to the hot work when it cannot be removed.
Maintain a visual of the area to ensure that sparks and bits of molten metal that fly into the surrounding area do not smolder.
Continuous watching for sparks during and after the cutting or welding of metal.
Report any incipient fires and/or discharge of fire extinguishers to Stop operations during any hazardous condition.
Must be physically capable of discharging a fire extinguisher and utilizing it according to the proper method.
Must not be afraid of heights or confined spaces. Requires bending, stooping, lifting, and carrying up to 50 lbs. regularly
